The City Doctor

Dr Katherine Loflin is an award-winning, internationally-recognised trailblazer in place science: loved places and why they matter to people, places, and economies. For more than a decade through her global consultancy, she has held leadership roles in some of the most groundbreaking place science projects in the world, earning her the moniker of The City Doctor. She’s also a two-time TEDx talker, published author, public speaking coach, and widely-featured expert in the US and international press.

Most recently, Dr Loflin launched Amazing Place Productions, an innovative production company that tells the historical stories of place through original stage and screen productions and through community experience events. The launch of her company was honoured by North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper through a proclamation naming June 23rd as Tell Your Place’s Story Day in North Carolina.

Previously she was awarded the international Place Marketing Award and was named the Guest of Honour and Master Class Instructor in 2014 by the Place Marketing Forum in France. She was an invited member of the global Placemaking Leadership Council and keynoted its inaugural events in Sweden and Australia. Dr Loflin was the first to bring the topic of place science to the TED stage and authored a book on the subject, Place Match: The City Doctor’s Guide to Finding Where You Belong. She also produced and hosted Place Matters, a radio talk show originating on-air in Miami, Florida, and simulcast around the world.

She has also previously served as a Program Director for the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, a place-based foundation in Miami, Florida, where she was responsible for guiding the foundation’s charitable investment of millions of dollars annually.

Dr Loflin received an undergraduate degree in Psychology from North Carolina State University in 1993. She went on to receive a Masters in Social Work in 1996 and a Ph.D. in Social Work with a concentration in Journalism in 2003, both from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the United States.
